Accessibility

I want everyone to be able to use this site, whether you get around with a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, a phone or enlarged text. This page says what I aim for, what I’ve checked, where it still falls short, and how to tell me about a problem.

What I aim for

The goal is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. I last tested the whole site against it in October 2026, page by page, with automated checks and by working through every interactive part with only a keyboard.

What that covers

  • Everything that responds to a mouse also works from the keyboard, with a visible focus ring. A skip link at the top of every page goes straight to the content.
  • Text meets AA contrast against its background, including text on the bright accent colors.
  • Pop-up windows, like the image viewer and the window that opens my older sites, keep focus inside them, close with Escape and put you back where you were.
  • The orbit view of every project has a list view that reads in order, for anyone who can’t use the animated version.
  • The pause button at the bottom of the screen stops every animation on the site, and if your device asks for reduced motion the site starts paused.
  • Pages reflow on a narrow screen and at 200% text size without scrolling sideways.

Where it falls short

The restored copies of my older sites run their original code from 1999 to 2012, as close to how they shipped as I can get them. They’re exhibits, and they carry the accessibility of their era, which wasn’t much. The window around them follows the rules above, but what’s inside it doesn’t always.

Tell me about a problem

If something on the site doesn’t work for you, email [email protected] and tell me which page it was and what got in the way. I read every message and I’ll fix what I can. This page was last revised on October 19, 2026.
